Description:

Tell Sifr is the modern name for ancient Kutalla, an Old Babylonian (ca. 1792-1595 BC) site well-known from cuneiform sources. The site is known for the discovery of a metal workshop by Loftus, testified by an hoard of metal tools and vessels to be recycled during the metalworking process.

The same difficulties described for reaching the site of Larsa ( http://www.abutbeirah.com/blog/?p=1020 ) can be equally repeated for the site of Tell Sifr – Kutalla. It is at a distance of few kilometres from Tell Senkereh so that it can be seen from Larsa, but the route is in the same way difficult and sometimes dangerous (while approaching the place, the car of the police which escorted us could not drive further, so that only our car could go until the vicinity of the site).

While in Larsa only minor traces of looting can be detected, in Kutalla the area seems to have been looted more extensively, even if not at the degree of Jokha/Umma (we will talk about Umma in a future post). Here, no visible structure can be seen on the surface and only the height of the site and the presence of pottery shards on the surface reveal the presence of an archaeological area. The possible touristic development and exploitation of the Tell appears to be quite far in the time, judging from the above mentioned absolute lack of any visible remains. Obviously, no indication and no touristic structure is to be found in the area.

Descrizione:

Tell Sifr è il nome moderno dell’antica Kutalla, un sito databile al periodo Antico Babilonese (circa 1792-1595 a.C.), ben conosciuto dai testi cuneiformi. Il sito è ben noto per la scoperta del laboratorio di lavorazione del metallo rinvenuto da Loftus, testimoniato da un tesoro di strumenti in metallo e vasi che sono stati riciclati durante il processo di fabbricazione dei metalli.

Le stesse difficoltà descritte per raggiungere il sito di Larsa ( http://www.abutbeirah.com/blog/?p=1020), possono essere ugualmente considerate anche per il sito di Tell Sifr – Kutalla. Esso si trova ad una distanza di pochi chilometri da Tell Senkereh, tanto che può essere anche visto da Larsa stessa, tuttavia il percorso è allo stesso modo difficile e a volte pericoloso (mentre ci avvicinavamo al luogo in questione, la macchina della polizia che ci scortava non ha potuto avvicinarsi ulteriormente, così che solamente la nostra vettura ha potuto continuare fino ai dintorni del sito)

Mentre a Larsa possono essere riscontrate poche tracce di saccheggi, a Kutalla l’area sembra essere stata saccheggiata in maniera molto più estensiva, anche se non è agli stessi livelli di degrado di Jokha/Umma (a breve un post su Umma). Qui non sono visibili strutture affioranti dalla superficie e solo l’altezza del sito e la presenza di materiale ceramico ha potuto rivelare la presenza di un’area archeologica. La possibilità di uno sfruttamento turistico e la valorizzazione del Tell sembra essere veramente lontana nel tempo, a giudicare dalla totale mancanza di alcun tipo di opere rimanenti visibili. Ovviamente, non ci sono indicazioni né tantomeno strutture turistiche presenti all’interno dell’area.

Position: The ancient site is situated 47 km northwest of Nasiriyah, some 25 kilometers southeast of the mounds of Uruk, near the east bank of the Shatt-en-Nil canal and 33 km south-west from Shatra.

Chronological frame: The site has had a lengthy occupation, from the Ubaid period in the fifth millennium BC to the Parthian period. Principal period of occupation: late 3rd millennium BC to circa 1750 BC.

Excavations and Brief History of the Site: 

The site was first excavated by William Loftus in 1850 for less than a month. In those early days of archaeology, the effort was more focused on obtaining museum specimens than scientific data and niceties like site drawings and findspots were not yet in common usage. Loftus recovered building bricks of Nebuchadnezzar II of the Neo-Babylonian Empire which enabled the sites identification as the ancient city of Larsa. Much of the effort by Loftus was on the temple of Shamash, rebuilt by Nebuchadnezzar II. Inscriptions of Burna-Buriash II of the Kassite dynasty of Babylon and Hammurabi of the First Babylonian Dynasty were also found. Larsa was also briefly worked by Walter Andrae in 1903. The site was inspected by Edgar James Banks in 1905. He found that widespread looting by the local population was occurring there.

The first modern, scientific, excavation of Tell Senkereh occurred in 1933, with the work of Andre Parrot. Parrot worked at the location again in 1967. In 1969 and 1970, Larsa was excavated by Jean-Claude Margueron. Between 1976 and 1991, an expedition of the DelégationArchéologiqueFrançaise en Iraq led by J-L. Huot excavated at Tell Senkereh for 13 seasons. Site condition: in May 2003, a group of scholars travelling with Major Sadowski and a platoon of Marines saw evidence of extensive looting, the most extensive and recent digging having occurred at some of the large baked-brick buildings where a team of French archaeologists working at Larsa during the 1970s and 1980s had discovered an archive of clay tablets with cuneiform texts. The excavation house built by the French had been destroyed after the 1991 Gulf War, and the site guard had been murdered. There was no sign of the present site guard; his house had been destroyed. Since that time, the site has been only intermittently guarded, because it occupies the border between two provinces, making it unclear which jurisdiction is responsible for the site.

An important Sumerian city, ruled also by a dynasty that exercised control over southern Mesopotamia in the early years of the second millennium.
As one of the earliest Sumerian cities, Larsa seems to have been part of some kind of league or confederation, as its emblem is on the “city seal” impression from Jemdet Nasr. Inscriptions from around 2700 BC record the rebuilding at Larsa of the E-Babbar (“Shining House”), temple of Shamash, the city god. Ur Nammu of Ur III also rebuilt this complex, which consisted of a temple and ziggurat, and which continued to function into the Neo-Babylonian period.

Larsa first became a formidable force in Mesopotamia during the Old Babylonian period (c. 2000-1600 BC). After the Third Dynasty of Ur collapsed, a power vacuum arose that many of the larger city-states hurried to fill. Amorite tribes suddenly made their appearance, and it was one of these tribal leaders, Gungunum, who established an independent dynasty in Larsa, challenging the reigning dynasty of Isin, capturing Ur, and even giving himself the old title “King of Sumer and Akkad”. Gungunum’s successors continually chipped away at Isin’s territory, cutting off its access to canals. As Isin continued to lose political and economic ground, the situation reached a tipping point: Isin was finally conquered around 1800 BC by the long-ruling (60 years!) Rim Sin of Larsa, who was, in turn, conquered by Hammurabi of Babylon in 1763 BC.

Even at its height, the Larsa dynasty only controlled 10-15 city states, nowhere near the territory controlled by other dynasties in Mesopotamian history. Nevertheless, huge building projects and agricultural undertakings can be validated by archaeological evidence.

Present Situation:

The street to go to Larsa (Tell Senkereh) from Nasiriyah is adequate only up to 20 km from the provincial capital, then for the next 27 km it is absolutely necessary to have a 4-wheel drive car in order to reach the site. The way not only is not paved, but because of the wind and sand-storm of the area (especially in late spring and summer) there isn’t even a track for the car, so that many times it is necessary to find the way among bushes and sand dunes.

The site itself, in the middle of an area which is mostly not inhabited, is quite impressive and has a peculiar and fascinating romantic appeal, but very few fragments of brick structures are visible (the temple Ebabbar, dedicated to the Sun-god, the base of the ziqqurat, some walls of a house dated to the Old Babylonian period, 1850 BC ca.). In any case, this is the biggest Tell of the area though a lot of other minor Tells or archaeological places can be found, visible also from Tell Senkereh itself, and the entire zone is a sort of big “archaeological reservoir”: in the future, if the area will be scientifically dug and properly developed, the possibility of exploitation of the archaeological remains can be very high.

Scavi e breve storia del sito: Il sito fu scavato per la prima volta  da William Loftus nel 1850 in meno di un mese. In quei primi giorni di archeologia, lo sforzo è stato focalizzato più su come ottenere esemplari da museo che dati scientifici e accuratezze come disegni del sito e la posizione dei reperti, in quanto  non era ancora uso comune.   Loftus trovò mattoni da costruzione risalenti a  Nabucodonosor II dell’impero neo-babilonese che ha permesso l’identificazione di siti, come l’antica città di Larsa. Gran parte degli sforzi di Loftus furono concentrati sul tempio di Shamash, ricostruito da Nabucodonosor II. Sono state ritrovate anche iscrizioni di Burna-Buriash II della dinastia cassita di Babilonia  e di Hammurabi della prima dinastia babilonese.  Larsa è stata anche oggetto di lavoro per un breve periodo di  Walter Andrae nel 1903. Il sito è stato ispezionato inoltre da Edgar James Banks nel 1905. Lui aveva notato che lì si erano verificati numerosi saccheggi da parte della popolazione locale.

Il primo scavo moderno e scientifico  di Tell Senkereh avvenne nel 1933,  ad opera di Andre Parrot. Egli scavò di nuovo la località nel 1967. Nel 1969 e 1970, Larsa è stata scavata da Jean-Claude Margueron. Tra il 1976 e il 1991, una spedizione del Delégation Archéologique Française en Iraq guidata da JL. Huot scavò a Tell Senkereh per 13 stagioni. Condizioni del sito: nel maggio 2003, un gruppo di studiosi viaggiando con  il Maggiore Sadowski e un plotone di Marines hanno notato la presenza di numerosi saccheggi, come il più  ampio e recente scavo avvenuto all’interno di grandi edifici in mattoni cotti, dove un team di archeologi francesi durante gli anni 1970 e 1980 aveva scoperto un archivio di tavolette di argilla con testi cuneiformi. La casa scavo costruita dai francesi era stata distrutta dopo la guerra del 1991, e la guardia  del sito era stata assassinata. Non c’era la presenza della guardia  del sito; la sua casa era stata distrutta. Da quel momento, il sito è stato custodito ad intermittenza, perché occupa il confine tra due province, il che rende  poco chiaro quale  giurisdizione è responsabile del sito.

Un’importante città sumera, governata anche da una dinastia che ha esercitato il controllo sulla bassa Mesopotamia  nei primi anni del secondo millennio.Come tutte le prime  città sumere, Larsa sembra essere stata parte di un qualche tipo di alleanza o confederazione, come è il suo stemma impresso  sul “sigillo della città” dal  Jemdet Nasr. Le iscrizioni relative al 2700 a.C. registrano la ricostruzione a Larsa dell’ E-Babbar (“Casa Splendente”), ovvero il tempio di Shamash, il dio della città. Anche  Ur Nammu di Ur III aveva ricostruito il complesso, che consisteva in un tempio e nella ziggurat, e che ha continuato a funzionare nel periodo neo-babilonese.

Inizialmente Larsa divenne una grande forza in Mesopotamia durante il periodo antico babilonese (c. 2000-1600 aC). Dopo la caduta della Terza Dinastia di Ur, molte delle più grandi città-stato si affrettarono a riempire  quel vuoto di potere appena sorto.  Fecero la loro  improvvisa comparsa  tribù  di amorrei, ed è stato uno  tra  questi  capi tribali, Gungunum, a ristabilire una dinastia indipendente in Larsa, a sfidare la dinastia regnante di Isin, a conquistare la città di Ur, e a darsi  il vecchio titolo di “Re di Sumer e di Akkad” . I successori di Gungunum continuarono a ridimensionare il territorio di Isin e a tagliare l’accesso a canali.  Poichè Isin continuava a perdere terreno politico ed economico,  la situazione raggiunse il suo punto di svolta: Isin fu infine conquistata intorno al 1800 a.C. dalla lunga reggenza di Rim Sin di Larsa (60 anni!) , che venne, a sua volta, conquistato da Hammurabi di Babilonia nel 1763.

Anche al suo apice, la dinastia di Larsa controllava solo 10-15 città-stato, il territorio non è stato sotto il controllo di altre dinastie nella storia mesopotamica. Tuttavia, i  progetti delle grandi costruzione e le aziende agricole possono essere convalidate dalle testimonianze archeologiche.

Situazione attuale:

La strada per andare a Larsa (Tell Senkereh) da Nassiriya è adatta solo fino a 20 km dal capoluogo di provincia, poi per i successivi 27 km è assolutamente necessario avere una macchina a 4 ruote motrici, per raggiungere il sito. La via  non solo non è asfaltata, ma a causa del vento e della tempesta di sabbia di questa zona (soprattutto in tarda primavera e in estate), non si trova nessun percorso per l’auto, cosicché molte volte è necessario trovare il modo per passare tra cespugli e le dune di sabbia.

Il sito stesso, nel bel mezzo di una zona che non è per lo più abitata, è abbastanza impressionante e ha un peculiare e suggestivo fascino idilliaco, ma sono molto pochi i  frammenti di strutture in muratura  visibili ( il tempio dell’ Ebbabar, dedicato al dio Sole, la base della ziqqurat, alcuni muri di una casa datata al periodo antico babilonese, 1850 aC ca.). In ogni caso, questo è il più grande Tell dell’area sebbene si  possono trovare  molti  altri tell minori o siti archeologici, visibili anche dallo stesso Tell Senkereh, tutta la zona è una sorta di grande “serbatoio archeologico”: in futuro, se l’area sarà scavata in modo scientifico e valorizzata in modo adeguato, la possibilità di sfruttamento dei resti archeologici potrà essere molto elevata.

after a long absence we’re back on the blog! Few days ago we arrived in Iraq, in a problematic moment for our beloved country…

We decided, thus, to rethink the 2014 excavation program. For now, just me and Franco are in Nasiriyah, in order to open the digging. Our wonderful specialists will join us in October and November after we have ascertained the safety conditions, also according to the information of our Embassy in Baghdad. This year we intended to take with us Sapienza students, whose collaboration in managing the documentation on the previous campaign has been fundamental for us, but it has been not possible. Nevertheless, we are confident that next year we shall carry on students’ training in Abu Tbeirah! Meanwhile, many thanks to Ludovica Bertolini, Desiré Bragalone, Maddalena Diaco, Shirin Khalatbari, Mirabello Mattera, Flavia Pacelli, Michael Renna, Thomas Scarpelli, Valeria Tappeti, Edward Zanetti!

Yesterday we have been on the Tell: due to the huge amount of rains of this fall, the excavation areas are filled by plants and, despite the heat of this summer and of these days, the whole area around Nasiriyah, Ur and Abu Tbeirah is still green! Inshallah, tomorrow we’ll start with cleaning the southern Area in order to continue investigating Building A and the cemetery area over it.

Internet does not work very well and thus we cannot update our blog with continuity, but we will try to make a post every week! However, we’ll try also to update Facebook and Twitter!

dopo una lunga assenza siamo di nuovo sul blog! Pochi giorni fa siamo arrivatiin Iraq, in un momento difficile per il nostro amato paese …

Abbiamo deciso, quindi, di ripensare il programma di scavo 2014. Per ora, solo io e Franco siamo a Nassiriya, per aprire lo scavo. I nostri meravigliosi specialisti si uniranno a noi in ottobre e novembre dopo che avremo accertato le condizioni di sicurezza, anche in base alle informazioni della nostra Ambasciata a Baghdad. Quest’anno avevamo intenzione di portare con noi studenti della Sapienza, la cui collaborazione nella gestione della documentazione relativa alla campagna precedente è stata fondamentale per noi, ma è stato purtroppo impossibile. Tuttavia, siamo fiduciosi che il prossimo anno potremo protarli ad Abu Tbeirah! Nel frattempo, molte grazie a Ludovica Bertolini, Desiré Bragalone, Maddalena Diaco, Shirin Khalatbari, Mirabello Mattera, Flavia Pacelli, Michael Renna, Thomas Scarpelli, Valeria Tappeti, Edward Zanetti!

Ieri siamo stati sul Tell: a causa delle abbondanti piogge di questo autunno, le aree di scavo si sono riempite di piante e, nonostante il caldo di questa estate e di questi giorni, l’intera area intorno a Nassiriya, Ur e Abu Tbeirah è ancora verde! Inshallah, domani inizieremo con la pulizia della zona meridionale, al fine di continuare a indagare Edificio A e l’area cimiteriale al di sopra di esso.

Internet non funziona molto bene e quindi non siamo in grado di aggiornare il blogh con continuità, ma cercheremo di fare un post ogni settimana! Intanto seguiteci su FB e Twitter (@AbuTbeirah)!

yesterday Iveco gave to our Mission a new car, a wonderful Daily 4×4, for the activities at Abu Tbeirah and at Ur.

It has been a wonderful day. The Dean of the University, Luigi Frati, inaugurated the car. The event was opened by the speech of the Dean, of H.E. Habib al-Sadr, Iraqi Ambassador for the Holy See, of Giovanni Grandi of the Italian Cooperation for the Development of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), of Prof. Ettore Ianulardo of the Culture Section of the MAE, of Davide Diana Marketing Manager for Africa and Middle East of IVECO and of Franco D’Agostino of our Mission.

After the conference, we went outside to see the new car of the Mission and the other vehicles given by Iveco to the Iraqi Minister of Electricity.

Then, we celebrated the event at the sound of the Ud.

ieri Iveco ha donato alla nostra missione una nuova auto, un meraviglioso Daily 4×4, per le attività ad Abu Tbeirah e Ur.

Una giornata meravigliosa. Il Rettore dell’Università, Luigi Frati, ha inaugurato l’auto. L’evento è stato aperto dal discorso del Rettore, di SE Habib al-Sadr, ambasciatore iracheno presso la Santa Sede, di Giovanni Grandi della Cooperazione Italiana per lo Sviluppo del Ministero degli Affari Esteri Italiano (MAE), del Prof. Ettore Ianulardo della Sezione Cultura del MAE, di Davide Diana, Responsabile Marketing  per l’Africa e il Medio Oriente di IVECO e di Franco D’Agostino della nostra Missione.

Dopo la conferenza, siamo andati fuori a vedere la nuova vettura della missione e gli altri veicoli forniti da Iveco al ministro iracheno dell’Elettricità.

Poi, abbiamo celebrato l’evento al suono dell’Ud.

Yesterday we have met in Rome Yahya al Nasri, Dhi-Qar Governor with his delegation in two different meetings.

First of all I want to stress that it has been wonderful to share a day with our Iraqi friends, that help us so warmfully in  our everyday life in Nasiriyah.

The first meeting was held in the building of the Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi and our guest was Monsignor Andreatta. Several speeches were addressed to the opportunity of trasforming Dhi-Qar in one of the future most important touristic and religious attraction.

The Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi went for the first time to Ur the last December, in order to visit the birthplace of Ibrahim (Abraham in Catholic tradition) and open the pilgrimage of Christians in Iraq.

After the meeting and a wonderful lunch we had the opportunity to visit the house of Monsignor Andreatta, in one of the highest place of the city: all the monuments of our wonderful Rome were visible around us.

In the afternoon we went to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affair for a meeting with the Italian Cooperation for Development that has several projects in Iraq. Among these projects, one of the most important is represented by the rehabilitation of the archaeological site of Ur, made in cooperation with the Iraqi-Italian Archaeological Mission at Abu Tbeirah. The first step of the project, on the E-Dublamakh Temple, has been already completed and consolidation activities on the monument will start in the next months.

Ieri abbiamo incontrato a Roma in due diversi incontri  Yahya al Nasri, Governatore del Dhi – Qar con la sua delegazione.

Prima di tutto voglio sottolineare che è stato meraviglioso condividere una giornata a Roma con i nostri amici iracheni, che ci aiutano con grande affetto nella vita quotidiana a Nassiriya .

La prima riunione è stata tenuta nel palazzo dell’Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi e il nostro ospite è stato Monsignor Andreatta. Diversi interventi sono stati indirizzati alla possibilità di trasformare il Dhi-Qar in una delle più importanti attrazioni turistiche dell’Iraq.

L’ Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi ha visitato per la prima volta Ur lo scorso dicembre, per rendere omaggio alla casa natale di Ibrahim (Abramo nella tradizione cattolica) e aprire il pellegrinaggio dei cristiani in Iraq.

Dopo l’incontro e un magnifico pranzo abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di visitare la casa di Monsignor Andreatta, all’interno del Palazzo del Vicariato, in uno dei luoghi più alti della città: tutti i monumenti della nostra meravigliosa Roma erano visibili intorno a noi.

Nel pomeriggio siamo andati al Ministero degli Affari Esteri italiano per un incontro con la Cooperazione Italiana allo Sviluppo, che ha diversi progetti in Iraq. Tra questi, il principale è di certo quello relativo alla valorizazione del sito archeologico di Ur, realizzato in collaborazione con la Missione Archeologica Italo-Irachena ad Abu Tbeirah. La prima fase del progetto, sul tempio é-dublamakh, è stata già completata e i lavori sul monumento inizieranno nei prossimi mesi.

Ali al-Shayal is a very good friend of us. He is a film maker and the director of the Nasiriyah office of the al-Fayhaa TV Channel.

Today he invited us to have lunch with him and his team in the office in the center of the city. We enjoyed an excellent food and a wonderful company.

Al-Fayhaa channel, which has his center in the city of Sulemaniyeh (Northern Iraq), has many offices abroad, from Canada to Australia, to London. The office of Nasiriyah covers the information on three provinces: beyond Dhi-Qar, also Maysan and Wasit.

One of the things that were for us interesting was the presence inside the office of a huge archive of footage covering the history of the city in the last 10 years!

It would be really interesting if Ali could make a film describing the history of the city in these ten complicated years where the rebirth of this city can be witnessed.

Ali al-Shayal è un nostro caro amico. È un regista e direttore dell’ufficio di Nasiriya del canale TV al-Fayhaa.

Oggi ci ha invitato a pranzare con lui e il suo team nell’ufficio nel centro di Nasiriyah. Abbiamo mangiato benissimo e goduto di una meravigliosa compagnia.

Al-Fayhaa Channel, che ha il suo centro direttivo nella città di Sulemaniyeh (Northern Iraq), ha molte sedi all’estero, dal Canada all’Australia, a Londra. L’ufficio di Nasiriyah copre le informazioni di tre province: oltre al Dhi-Qar, anche Maysan e Wasit.

Today we visited together with our good friend Amir Doshi the pottery laboratory of the Dhi-Qar directorate of education, directed by Qasim al Battat.

Here Nasiriyah students and teachers can learn or develop their skills on the manufacture of artistic objects in clay, bronze, wood, leather and other materials. They can also take lessons on painting held by Karim Dawood.

We were informed on the way in which they prepare clay for pottery making.

They gather clay from a site near Ur, digging at a deep of at least 1 m and a half. This clay is almost free of salt and dirties. The gathered  clay is then sieved and put in water (they use for this a little tub ) for several days (at least three). The first day they put ¾ of water and one part of clay and then they wedge the soil in the water. During the night the clay deposits on the bottom of the tub so that in the second day they can remove the dirty water (they use a tube to suck away the water). They repeat this procedure at least three times until the clay is completely clean (the last time they put ¼ of water and ¾ of clay). After the clay is completely clean they put it in boxes covered by clothes  by using wooden sieves. The clay is still too wet to be used so they let it dry under the sun (a procedure that is of course much quicker in Summer!).

The clay must be wedged and cut with a nylon string (they use the fishing line) in order to eliminate all the air bubbles.

Iraqi clay is considered very elastic. It usually has naturally sand inclusion but sometimes some sand can be added in order to make it suitable for pottery making.

We have been told that the temperature at which vases made with Iraqi clay are baked must not exceed the 900°.

Oggi abbiamo visitato insieme al nostro caro amico Amir Doshi il laboratorio di ceramica del Direttorato per l’educazione, diretto da Qasim al-Battat.

Qui gli studenti e i docenti di Nasiriyah possono imparare o approfondire la loro abilità nel realizzare oggetti artistici in argilla, bronzo, legno, pelle e altri materiali. Possono anche prendere lezioni di pittura con Karim Dawood.

Ci hanno raccontato il modo in cui preparano l’argilla affinché possa essere lavorata.

L’argilla proviene da una località molto vicina al sito di Ur ed è necessario scavare per almeno 1,5 metri. Questa argilla è priva di sale e di impurità. L’argilla raccolta viene poi setacciata e messa in acqua (usano per l’operazione una piccola vasca da bagno) per alcuni giorni. Il primo giorno mettono nella vasca ¾ di acqua e ¼ di argilla e poi mischiano e impastano il terreno nell’acqua. Durante la notte l’argilla si deposita sul fondo della vasca e così  nel secondo giorno possono cambiare l’acqua sporca utilizzando semplicemente un tubo di plastica. Questa operazione viene ripetuta almeno tre volte sino alla completa pulitura dell’argilla (per l’ultimo ciclo usano ¼ di acqua e ¾ di argilla). Dopo la completa pulizia, mettono l’argilla in casse coperte di stracci prendendola con dei setacci. L’argilla è ancora troppo umida per essere usata e quindi viene lasciata al sole ad asciugare (una procedura che è ovviamente più veloce d’estate).

L’argilla deve essere molte volte impastata e tagliata con un filo (usano in genere una lenza da pesca) per eliminare dall’impasto tutte le bolle d’aria.

L’argilla irachena è molto elastica. Ha solitamente sabbia come incluso naturale ma a volte è necessario aggiungerne un po’ per renderla adatta alla lavorazione.

Ci è poi stato detto che l’argilla irachena deve essere cotta ad una temperatura non superiore ai 900°.

Today we took a Taxy and from the taxy-driver we heard an amazing story.

He told us that his family is from Ur and his grandfather had worked with Leonard Woolley in the excavation of Ur. He had a very good eye for ancient objects and decided to make some money out of it!

He made a perfect copy of the findings of the British excavations and buried them for six months…

Then he gave these objects to Woolley who took them as real objects, gave him the money for the finding and put them together with the real ones. Of course after some years people from the British Museum came back to tell him that they knew now that the objects were fake but at the same time they offered him a job as copy-maker inside the British Museum! He refused saying: “If I came, they will hang me!”.

We do not know whether this story is true… but it was really worthing an information in the blog…

Oggi abbiamo preso un taxi e parlando con l’autista abbiamo ascoltato una storiella divertente.

Ci ha raccontato che la sua famiglia viene da Ur e che suo nonno lavorava per Leonard Woolley negli scavi del sito di Ur. Il nonno possedeva un buon occhio per gli oggetti antichi e decise di ricavare qualche soldo da questa sua capacità!

Realizzò una copia perfetta di alcuni ritrovamenti dello scavo inglese e li seppellì per sei mesi…

Poi diede questi oggetti a Woolley che li ritenne originali, diede lui dei soldi per la scoperta e li mise insieme ai reperti originali. Ovviamente dopo qualche anno alcune persone del British Museum gli dissero che avevano scoperto i falsi ma poi gli offrirono un lavoro al Museo per realizzare delle copie degli oggetti esposti! Ma il nonno rifiutò dicendo:”se vengo, mi impiccheranno!”.

Non sappiamo se la storia è vera… ma era di certo degna di un post nel nostro blog!

We arrived very late yesterday in Nasiriyah, after several hours spent in Istanbul airport waiting for our flight to Basrah.
After our arrival in the Urk (Uruk) hotel and a rest of one hour, we met our friends for a thé in the coffee in Habubi Street, where the intellectuals of Nasiriyah use to meet.

Ieri siamo arrivati molto tardi a Nasiriyah, dopo aver trascorso varie ore nell’aeroporto di Istanbul in attesa del nostro volo per Basrah.
Dopo il nostro arrivo presso l’hotel Urk (Uruk) e una pausa di un’ora, abbiamo incontrato i nostri amici nel caffé di Habubi Street, dove gli intellettuali di Nasiriyah sono soliti incontrarsi.
