AN – SKY KING
WHO’S AN:
His name in Sumerian language means “sky”. In the Mesopotamian Pantheon An occupies the highest position, in fact he is the father of the Gods. He presides over the assembly of the Gods, his children, called Anunnaki. Before their generation, An was the absolute leader, later this position was occupied by Enlil.

PARTNERS: Ki; Inanna/Ishtar; Nammu (mother of Enki); Antum
POWER:
The center of his Cult was Uruk, here was his sanctuary (called Eanna “house of Sky/An) which he shared with the goddness Inanna. She is one of his wives. Originally An’s bride was the earth, Ki, and with her, he engendered all vegetation. An is a creator, in fact he established the heaven and the earth and everything in the Mesopotamian world. An ordered the universe, removing the chaos and anarchy.
An had the divine power of heaven and the source of rain. For this reason he is connected to Fertility. Maybe he belonged to the herders’ Pantheon, because An was imagined in bovine form. One of his epithets was “Fecund-Bull”. This is, because in spring, the thunder remembers the bellowing of a bull, but also because the rain fertilizes the vegetation.
IN AKKADIAN PANTHEON:
An, in the akkadian Pantheon became Anum and his wife Antum.
ICONOGRAPHY:
In art, his specific iconography and attributes are obscure. The symbol of An is a horned cap.
AN-RE DEL CIELO
CHI È AN:
Il suo nome nella lingua sumerica significa “cielo”. Nel Pantheon mesopotamico An occupa la più alta posizione, infatti è il padre degli Dei. Lui presiede l’assemblea degli dei, suoi figli, chiamati Anunnaki. Prima della loro generazione, An era il capo assoluto, successivamente la sua posizione venne occupata da Enlil.

POTERE:
Il centro del suo culto era Uruk, qui c’era il suo santuario che condivideva con la Dea Inanna. Lei è una delle sue paredre. Originariamente la sposa di An era la terra, Ki, e con lei, ha generato tutta la vegetazione. An è un Dio creatore, infatti lui ha fondato il cielo e la terra e ogni cosa nel mondo mesopotamico. An ha ordinato il mondo, togliendo il caos e l’’anarchia.
An possedeva il potere divino sul cielo ed è la sorgente di pioggia. Per questa ragione è legato alla fertilità. Forse lui apparteneva al Pantheon dei pastori, perché An era immaginato con forma bovina. Uno dei suoi epiteti era “toro fertile”. Questo, avviene in quanto nel cielo primaverile, il tuono ricorda il muggito di un toro ma anche perché la pioggia rende fertile la vegetazione.
NEL PANTHEON ACCADICO:
An, nel Pantheon accadico divenne Anum e la sua consorte era Antum.
ICONOGRAFIA:
Nelle rappresentazione artistiche, la sua immagine e i suoi attributi rimangono oscuri. Il simbolo di An è il copricapo cornuto.
